Many thanks for visiting my website and I hope you will find it useful!
I was born in Eastbourne, Sussex, in 1941; and much as I love that county, my life has led me to several other locations
- the Midlands, Nottingham, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Berkshire - and finally in retirement to Ledbury in Hereforshire. Here I lead a convivial and fairly self-indulgent time socialising and writing novels. I emphasise that last phrase because although being an English graduate of two universities and having taught ‘Eng. Lit.’ all my professional life, never did I ever contemplate doing any creative writing myself.
Textual analysis of other people’s poetry and prose was quite enough for me - and indeed, gave enormous satisfaction. But for some reason the desire to tell a story myself with invented characters and situations, never really took a hold. It was only when I was sixty-four and well retired, that out of idle curiosity I thought I might try my hand at a short story - just to see what writing fiction felt like.
I found out: and to my ongoing surprise the Bones series is the result!
The first of the series, A Load Of Old Bones, was rejected by everybody - agents and publishers alike - and feeling that at my age time was running out, I felt forced to self-publish.
Being idle and having no business experience, this was a terrifying prospect but somehow it worked and the paperback sold well. And a year later, with the sequel Bones In The Belfry finished, I was much relieved to be offered a contract by the publishers Constable & Robinson. Jubilation all round!
However, there had also been a little excitement before that, as I had been approached by a newly formed audio book company Joyful Productions Ltd who were eager to include me in their repertoire, and who had actually managed to persuade veteran comedy actor Leslie Phillips to read one of the parts - which he does with typical style and suavity!
All five books in the series have given me great fun to write and I hope others will share in the joke. Click here for details of these, plus my latest effort A Little Murder.
